POLYNEW

Project title: Engineered biopolymer aerogels for next generation water remediation – POLYNEW
Project leader at POLYFUN: Martina Salzano de Luna
Funding programme: FIS2 2023 Fondo Italiano per la Scienza – Italian Ministry of University and Research
Budget: 1.65 M€
Duration: 10/2025 – 10/2028

Water scarcity is a growing global issue, worsened by pollutants in wastewater from everyday products. Reusing wastewater requires advanced adsorbent materials, which are currently inadequate. POLYNEW aims to engineer biopolymer aerogels enhanced with nanoparticles to create hybrid materials with broad-spectrum pollutant removal capabilities. By combining experimental and computational methods, the project will tailor aerogel microstructures to optimize performance and sustainability. Machine learning will be used to analyze material data and predict properties. POLYNEW seeks to revolutionize water remediation while contributing to other fields like catalysis, sensing, and energy storage through innovative, eco-conscious materials engineering.
